The #1 Amazon Photo Rule Explained (White Background)

On Amazon, a picture isn’t just worth a thousand words—it’s worth a thousand clicks, and potentially, thousands in sales. Your product images are your digital storefront, your virtual salesperson, and the single most critical factor in a customer’s decision to click “Add to Cart.” Get them right, and you thrive. Get them wrong, and you risk becoming invisible.

Amazon enforces a strict set of image guidelines, and failure to comply can lead to listing suppression. This means your product gets hidden from search results, effectively erasing it from the marketplace. To keep your products visible and appealing, you need to master the art and science of Amazon product photography. Here’s how to do it right.

1. Master the Main Image Requirements

Your main image is the hero shot. It’s what customers see in search results, and it has the toughest set of rules. There is no room for creative interpretation here; compliance is mandatory.

First, your main image must have a pure white background. Not off-white, not light grey—pure white. The technical requirement is an RGB value of 255, 255, 255. This creates a clean, consistent shopping experience across the platform.

Next, the image must be a professional, real photograph of the product you are selling. Illustrations, mockups, or placeholders are strictly forbidden. The product itself must fill at least 85% of the total image area, ensuring customers can clearly see what they’re buying. Finally, the main image must be completely clean. That means no extra text, no logos, no watermarks, and no props or accessories that aren’t included with the purchase. The product, and only the product, is the star.

2. Nail the Technical Specifications

Beyond the content of the image, Amazon has technical requirements to ensure quality and functionality. Getting these specs right is crucial for all your images, not just the main one.

Your images must be saved in JPEG, PNG, GIF, or TIFF format, with JPEG being the most recommended. In terms of size, the longest side of your image must be at least 500 pixels. However, to unlock one of Amazon’s most powerful conversion tools—the zoom function—your image needs to be at least 1,000 pixels on its longest side. We highly recommend aiming for 1,600 pixels or larger to provide an exceptional, high-resolution zoom experience that lets customers inspect every detail of your product. Just be sure not to exceed 10,000 pixels on the longest side.

3. Tell a Story with Secondary Images

Once you’ve locked in your compliant main image, you can get more creative with your secondary images. This is your opportunity to answer customer questions visually and showcase your product in a real-world context.

The strict pure white background rule doesn’t apply here. Use these additional slots to show your product from different angles, highlight specific features with close-ups, and display the product’s scale. Lifestyle images showing the product in use are incredibly effective at helping customers visualize it in their own lives. You can also use infographics to call out key benefits or specifications, but ensure they are professionally designed and easy to read.

4. Understand the Cost of Non-Compliance

Ignoring these guidelines isn’t a risk worth taking. The primary consequence is listing suppression. If your main image doesn’t meet the standards, your product will be removed from Amazon’s search results and category browsing. It will still exist in your seller account, but for all intents and purposes, it will be invisible to shoppers. You won’t make any sales if customers can’t find you. In some cases, your images may simply be rejected during the upload process, forcing you to correct them before your listing can go live.

5. Avoid Risky “Hacks” and Loopholes

You may see other sellers trying to bend the rules, for example, by adding promotional text or graphics onto the product’s packaging within the main image. While you might get away with this temporarily, it’s a dangerous game. Amazon’s enforcement can be inconsistent, but its bots and review teams are always scanning listings. A violation that goes unnoticed today could lead to your listing being suppressed without warning tomorrow. The best long-term strategy is to adhere to the guidelines and compete on the quality of your product and your listing.
