Prime Exclusive Discount Is No Longer Free

Starting August 14, 2024, Amazon has introduced a fee for Prime Exclusive Discounts during US deal events, beginning with the Prime Big Deal Days later this year. This change could impact sellers who rely on these discounts to boost sales and visibility during major shopping events.

What’s Changing?

While Prime Exclusive Discounts outside of deal events remain free, a $50 fee will now be charged for promotions that run during events such as:

  • Prime Day
Prime Day is Amazon’s annual shopping event for Prime members, usually held in July. It’s a massive sale event that features significant discounts across a wide range of products. Prime Day is designed to drive sales for Amazon and its sellers, offering special pricing and deals to attract customers during a mid-year shopping surge.
  • Prime Big Deal Days
Prime Big Deal Days is a newer shopping event introduced by Amazon, set to occur in the fall. It serves as a lead-up to the holiday shopping season, offering Prime members early access to deep discounts before Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This event is a chance for sellers to capitalize on the fall shopping rush and attract early holiday shoppers.
  • Black Friday
Black Friday is a global shopping event that takes place the day after Thanksgiving in the US. Traditionally known for in-store sales, it has expanded to online platforms like Amazon, offering customers massive discounts and doorbuster deals on thousands of products. For Amazon sellers, Black Friday is a prime opportunity to tap into high-volume traffic and move products quickly.
  • Cyber Monday
Black Friday is a global shopping event that takes place the day after Thanksgiving in the US. Traditionally known for in-store sales, it has expanded to online platforms like Amazon, offering customers massive discounts and doorbuster deals on thousands of products. For Amazon sellers, Black Friday is a prime opportunity to tap into high-volume traffic and move products quickly.

This $50 fee applies per promotion, regardless of how many products are included. Whether you promote 20 items or 100, the event fee remains $50. Importantly, you’ll only be charged if at least one sale is made during the event.

Why Leverage Prime Exclusive Discounts?

Even with the new fee, Prime Exclusive Discounts are a powerful tool for increasing brand visibility. These discounts come with special event badging, which can make your products stand out during high-traffic shopping periods, leading to increased sales. For sellers, this means a prime opportunity to attract customers during key shopping events, especially with the growing competition on Amazon.

When Will the Fee Be Charged?

The $50 fee will be added after the event, but only if your promotion results in at least one sale. If no sales are made, no fee will be charged. This makes the investment relatively low risk for sellers who have a strong product offering and want to take advantage of the traffic surges during these events.

How to Set Up a Prime Exclusive Discount?

Setting up a Prime Exclusive Discount is straightforward:

  1. Go to the Prime Exclusive Discounts page in Seller Central.
  2. Follow the steps to create your promotion for the desired event.
  3. Before submission, Amazon will display any event fees that will be incurred. You can also find this fee information on the discount’s detail page after it has been submitted.

While the new fee structure might seem like an added expense, it’s important to consider the potential sales and visibility boost that comes from participating in major Amazon events. The $50 fee could easily be offset by just a few sales, especially if your products perform well during these high-traffic days.

Be sure to evaluate your product offerings and plan ahead for upcoming events like Prime Big Deal Days, Black Friday, and Cyber Monday to make the most of Prime Exclusive Discounts.

Happy selling!
